J. Peatman is an artist working in Edmonton, AB. She has a BFA in Visual Arts and has shown her work in galleries across BC and Alberta. Using illustrative techniques, she creates worlds and whimsical characters inspired by mythology, fantasy illustration and pop surrealism.

The Other Side of the Sun is an ongoing series that I have been developing since the beginning of the pandemic.

The illustrative quality of this work alludes to a fascination for storybook illustration and graphic novels. Art history, mythology and past cultures are also a significant inspiration for the visual components, most notably that of Medieval Europe and Asia. Referencing history and human experience in this way allows me to explore and process the meanings of my familial and biological ties, as well as promote curiosity and discussion for the past.

I find these surreal, fictional paintings are places in which identity, beauty and power can be transformed and experimented upon. Here I can unpackage feelings and desires free from the strains and physics of reality and consider them in a new context. I hope viewers are compelled to investigate these intimate, imaginative worlds and consider new narratives and points of view.
